review: Beautiful Addictions by Season Vining

Beautiful Addictions by Season Vining

My rating:  4/5

Published: 6.10.14
Genre:  New Adult Contemporary Romance

Summary –

Josie Banks is a girl without a past.  After being found unconscious with no memory, she was shuffled in and out of foster homes where she suffered years of abuse. An experience that left her broken, damaged, and clinging to drugs and meaningless hook-ups to numb her pain.

When Josie disappeared years ago, she took a piece of Tristan with her.  She’s the girl he thought he lost forever—the one he’s never been able to forget.  Now a twist of fate has brought them back together, and he never wants to let her out of his inked arms again.  But Tristan is haunted by a dark past of his own.  On the run from ruthless criminals that shattered Josie’s world years ago, reentering her life puts them both in danger.

As Josie and Tristan’s lives become tangled once again, they find themselves unwilling and unable to escape the relentless pull that draws them together.  But in Season Vining's Beautiful Addictions, will the past leave their love in ruins—or bind them together for a lifetime? (Thanks to GoodReads.com for the summary)

My Thoughts –

Beautiful Addictions is not so pretty story about a girl who doesn’t know who she is and the boy who wouldn’t stop looking for her.  This story is comprised not only with the reconnecting of Tristan and his only love, but also with a mysterious plot that’ll have you ah-haing when it’s all said and done.

Josie and Tristan are complex characters.  They aren’t from cookie cutter lives and families.  They’ve each had it rough and cope life in their own ways, be it as self-destructive as they are.  I loved the coming together of this couple in just about every way.

I liked it a lot.  I think the writing was decently done and the language pretty up to par and modern.  I enjoyed the duel POV's in this story  - I think the author writing it like that made it more interesting.  Easy to read, flowed well and lots of steamy bits.  Great job.  I look forward to more from this author.

Summary

The hotly anticipated sequel to Losing Control.

I thought I needed only one thing in my life–the money and power to crush one man. But the moment I laid eyes on Victoria Corielli, my thirst for revenge was replaced by my craving for her.

No rule would keep me away; no obstacle too large to overcome. Not her will, not our differing social positions, not my infamous past. When she lost everything, I helped her pick up the pieces. When she trusted me with everything, she sealed her fate.

I’ve convinced Victoria she can put her heart in my hands. Now I have to protect it–from her shady stepfather and my business rivals, from enemies known and hidden. I’ll do anything to keep her. And I might have to prove it, because now Victoria's risking more than her heart to be with me; she’s risking her life.

Excerpt

I want us to get married. Soon. Do you want a big wedding?”

“Married? I mean, I guess I thought you were serious but I figured…I don’t know.” Her voice trails off.

“That my proposal of marriage was somehow insincere? I’ve never wanted anything more. I just didn’t want to pressure you because of all the emotional upheaval you’re experiencing now.” Rolling over so she can see me and judge the sincerity for herself, I declare, “I want you to be my wife. The mother of any children we have. My partner in life. I want that to happen now so that I can introduce you as Mrs. Ian Kerr.”

Her eyes close for a moment and beneath the lids, silent tears leak out. Her words, though, are classic. “Maybe you should take my name. You can be Ian Corielli and I’ll introduce you as Mr. Victoria Corielli.”

“As long as it means you’re mine in the eyes of the world, I’ll be Mr. John Smith.”

She wraps her arms around my neck and clings to me. This time the shudders I’m soothing are from maybe, possibly, hopefully joy for our future. “I’m okay with Victoria Kerr,” she chokes out. “You better give me a big rock and lots of flowers since you’re proposing to me while we’re naked.”

“I proposed to you when I first took you to the house on the Long Island Sound.”

“You didn’t propose. You said that you wanted me to be your wife and fill your big house with lots of little people.”

“That’s a proposal.”

“It was a demand.”

“It was a request couched as a demand.”

Her body is shaking with laughter. “You’ve been in charge for too long. That was no request.”

Pushing to my knees, I reach into the nightstand and retrieve the box I bought before Sophie died. Her eyes grow huge and her hands come up to the cover her mouth. I flip the box lid open, pluck the ring out and toss it aside.

Lifting her shaking hand in mine, I slide the ring down her finger.

“When I was fifteen I made a hundred different stupid vows. I’d avenge my mother. I’d rise to the top of Wall Street and smite everyone down. I’d crush Richard Howe beneath the sole of my boot. I’d win at everything. But I never wished for happiness because I didn’t know what it was until you came into my life. How could I want something I didn’t know was missing? Now, everything I’ve achieved pales in comparison to having you love me. When I say that you’re my heart, my everything, those aren’t just words. They are the only truth in my world. I’d give up money, revenge, success, as long as I could lie down next to you at night and wake up with your face beside mine.

There is no greater achievement in my life than having you fall in love with me and I recognize on some mysterious level that is pure luck. I need you to marry me and be my wife. I need you to be the mother of my children. I need you because without you I am nothing. I am a pile of bones and flesh filled with misery. You bring me to life. Love me, marry me, be with me in this life and into all the ones we live from this point ever after.”

“Well, since you put it like that, I guess I must.” She rises and kisses me. Our mouths sealing the promises we’ve made to another one another.

I make love to her again then, slowly. We barely move. I just slide in and we rock together and allow the strength of our emotions to carry us into the heaven.

~ EXCERPT ~

Abigail puckered her lips and applied a light coating of peach flavored lip gloss. She cringed at the sight of her tired reflection staring back at her in the mirror. Picking up a tortoiseshell compact, she dabbed a bit of concealer on the circles under here steel-gray eyes. There was nothing worse than visitations and the constant barrage of people who came out for them.

Just as she reached the bottom step, a swift tug at her arm threw her off balance. Her left knee buckled, but the firmness of the grip refused to let her fall.

“Make sure no one goes on a sight-seeing tour tonight,” Stu growled in her ear.

“Why on earth would you care what people do?” Abigail sneered through gritted teeth while trying to pry her arm away.

“They come in the door, down the hall, look at the dead guy, tell the old crone they’re sorry, then leave. We don’t want anyone staying longer than they need to.”

review: Breathe Into Me by Sara Fawkes

Breathe Into Me by Sara Fawkes

My rating:  3/5

DRC provided by NetGalley for an honest review

Published: 4.8.14

Genre:  New Adult Contemporary Romance

Summary –

STANDALONE, FULL-LENGTH NOVEL.
HEA ENDING, NO CLIFFHANGERS.

How did my life get so broken?  It’s a question Lacey St. James asks herself every day. Stuck raising her little brother in a trailer park while she works a dead end job at a grocery store, she has a stalker exboyfriend, a bad reputation, and no way out.

And then she meets Everett, whose presence changes her entire existence.

Everett is an outsider to her small community, in town for the summer housesitting one of the grand mansions off the Mississippi coast. When he saves her in a bar one night, she’s grateful but wary of his intentions. Lacey doesn’t trust most men in her life, but for reasons Lacey can't understand, Everett is completely captivated by her. He’s determined to show her that life can offer more than she’d ever hoped for, if only she believes in herself. As she works with him to free herself, Lacey desperately yearns to trust him, to move on and perhaps start fresh.

But what happens when she finds out that everything he’s told her about himself was a lie? (Thanks to GoodReads.com for the summary)

My Thoughts –

I thought Breathe Into Me was a great story about a girl from the wrong part of town finding something better on the other side.  I enjoyed Lacey and Everett’s journey toward one another.  My heart just about broke for Lacey and her circumstances.  Unfortunately people in the real world go through this kind of stuff all the time, doesn’t make it any easier to read about.

Lacey had her ups and downs for me.  I liked how she wanted to make a better life for herself and how she wanted to take care of her little brother.  I didn’t like how she was so naive at times.  I, however, dug the hell out of Everett.  He had his flaws as well, but hello – he’s Everett.

I liked this story and would have loved it if the editing was just a bit more consistent.  It’s east to read, fast paced and full of something you’ll want to keep reading til it’s done.  Good job tot the author, I look forward to more!!

Summary –

Pixie and Levi haven't spoken in nearly a year when they find themselves working―and living―at the same inn in the middle of nowhere. Once upon a time, they were childhood friends. But that was before everything went to hell. And now things are... awkward.
All they want to do is avoid each other, and their past, for as long as possible. But now that they're forced to share a bathroom, and therefore a shower, keeping their distance from one another becomes less difficult than keeping their hands off each other. Welcome to the hallway of awkward tension and sexual frustration, folks. Get comfy. It’s going to be a long summer. (Thanks to GoodReads.com for the summary)

My Thoughts –

Best Kind of Broken is a great story about two people who need to let go of the past and live for the future.  I enjoyed the character of Pixie and Levi.  You could almost feel the animosity between the two, but you also feel the pull they had on one another as well.

This book made me laugh out loud several times and then some.  The writing is easy to read, easy to follow and easy to fall in love with.  I loved the interaction between the two, it was great.  I enjoyed the view of the story from both sides – duel POV’s are my new favorite.  I also think the glimpses into the past were a great addition to the story.

Well done to the author.  I like your style of writing, your characters and the body painting scenes you wrote was HOT.  I will definitely be reading more in this series and other by Chelsea Fine.
