review: The Bite of Winter by Lauren Smith

Zoey is down on her luck, homeless and jobless over Christmas. When she's attacked in an alley, she's rescued by two century old Irish vampires named Ian and Connor. It's up to them to win her heart over Christmas.

Looking for a sexy menage story? Look no further than THE BITE OF WINTER by Lauren Smith.  And even better? THE BITE OF WINTER isn’t *just* a menage, it’s a menage with two sexy vampires, what more could a girl ask for?!

Synoposis:

Zoey Blake is about as far down on her luck as she can get. A car crash took her parents, leaving her destitute and on the street. When she’s attacked by another homeless person, her lifeblood drains away as her fading vision is filled with the face of a handsome stranger.

Ian Kennedy, a century old Irish vampire, never could resist rescuing a stray. As a few drops of his blood heals Zoey’s wounds, he realizes she’s a sweet, tempting, flesh-and-blood woman. But there’s one problem. Connor, who made Ian promise decades ago: no more mortal lovers.

After another vampire murdered his soulmate, Connor O’Shea swore never to let a mortal woman pay the price for loving him. Until he feels Zoey’s skin and tastes her lips. She makes him want to break that vow.

Zoey finds herself caught in their web of seduction. But as Christmas draws near and her grief deepens, happiness seems far out of reach. And Ian and Connor join forces to prove their love is sacred, special…and forever.

Warning: This book contains two scorching-hot Irish vampires, one lady with plenty of pluck but zero luck, naughty lingerie, and enough Christmas cheer to redeem even the darkest creatures.

My Thoughts -
I enjoyed The Bite of Winter.  I'm not sure I was totally in love with the characters, but the story was fast paced and pretty darn hot.  Some of the dialogue was a bit cheesy, but I guess when the vamps are Irish and from before the Great Famine, you get cheesy.  I thought the story was good but it needed something more, like some kind of something it just didn't have.  It's short, easy to read and the sensual scenes are decent.

Astrophysicist Meredith Burke's professional life is perfect. Her personal life is another story. Years ago, a menage with the man she loved and his roommate left her with a broken heart and a secret. She hasn't trusted anyone since, but when she meets rugged hunting guide Charlie Connor she figures she doesn't need to. He's got "one-night stand" written all over him.

After one night with Meredith, Charlie needs more. She's intoxicating, and shockingly willing to give him total control of her body. When she agrees to spend an entire week with him at the lodge where he works, it's more than he'd hoped for. But Blaine Bridges, Charlie's best friend and boss, has his own secrets.

Blaine hasn't seen Meredith since that disastrous encounter eight years ago, but he still has feelings for her. Now she's dating his best friend, the man he wants for himself. When Meredith invites him to join in their naughty play, his pleasure is all-consuming. But will the secrets they all hold close destroy a beautiful beginning or bring these three lovers closer than they ever imagined?

Excerpt: You have secrets.
“This vein running along the top of your foot is your heart line. You have secrets.”
The ache in her chest throbbed, but she ignored it and said brusquely,“Everyone has secrets.”
He cocked his head and studied her face, not her feet. Although her feet were very happy with the attention his hands were giving them. “Yours are deeper than most. That’s why this vein is so prominent.”
She tried to make her voice light and teasing. “What kind of secrets?”
“Sexual.”
She laughed and relaxed. Everyone had sex secrets.
“You like a little kink.”
She stiffened. “No.” Not anymore. That hadn’t worked out well for her.
“Have you ever tried it?”
“I thought you were reading my feet, not playing twenty questions.”
He chuckled. “So that’s a yes.” He lifted one foot and peered at the bottom. “You don’t like being short.”
She rolled her eyes. “My feet didn’t tell you that. My shoes did.”
His thumb pressed into her arch again, sending her protests skittering. “You have a high arch, which means you like to be in control.”
“Actually, it means I’m missing a joint in the top of my foot. But never mind that. Don’t you like control?”
“Depends on the situation.” He lowered her foot back to his lap and began that bone-melting massage again. He looked thoughtful but didn’t speak for a while, long enough that she relaxed.
“What didn’t you like?”
“Hmm?”
“About the kink?”
She sighed. “The way the guy dumped me after.”
His hands stopped. “He couldn’t handle it?”
“I guess hypothesizing that your girlfriend is a whore is more exciting than the actual experiment required to prove it.” No, that wasn’t right. Dylan had loved the actual experiment. He just hadn’t loved her afterward.
Charlie blinked. Perhaps she should have put it in layman’s terms. Something like, my boyfriend dumped me after I simultaneously fucked him and his roommate.
“Kink doesn’t make you a whore.”
“Depends on the kind of kink.”
“As long as it’s consensual.”
She shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. It’s not like we’re in this for the long term. One hookup. If it’s good, a few more before you leave town. Then we move on.”
He leaned toward her and touched her chin with the tip of his finger. His calluses were rough and warm, comforting. “Whoa. Slow down. Is that what you think this is? A hookup?”
She hadn’t wanted to discuss it, but maybe it was better to get it out there. He’d probably be relieved to know that she had no expectations beyond sex. “Charlie, I’ve had a nice time, but let’s not make this into something more than it is.”
His eyes narrowed as if he was studying her. What was he thinking? Was he deciding if she was worth the effort? Huh. What effort? She was easy. Maybe he was thinking about the fun he could have with the sexual deviant. Two weeks of no-strings-attached sex?
A slow grin spread from his lips and crinkled the corners of his blue eyes. Oh yeah, he was definitely thinking about sex. One finger drifted down the side of her neck, over her breastbone, then veered left to the swell of her breast before circling her nipple and leaving behind a tingling heat. She watched and wondered how long before he got to the good stuff. Not that his hands didn’t feel nice. But she wanted her clothes gone. She wanted his fingers teasing her bared nipples. He had sexy hands. Darker than the rest of him, lean between the prominent knuckles. She liked watching them.
Desire warmed and dampened her panties. She wanted them gone too. Wanted his mouth on her clit, then his cock inside her. She hoped he wasn’t one of those men who liked to draw things out. Waiting wasn’t her strong suit. She didn’t understand women who wanted prolonged foreplay. It didn’t make the orgasm any better. What was the point?
“You’re thinking too much.”
“I’m just waiting—”
“For?”
She almost said “for the good part,” but that didn’t seem like the best idea. She didn’t want to deflate his, uh, interest. On the other hand, if she told him she wanted a slam-bam-thank-you-ma’am, he might be flattered.
As she wrestled with her answer, he said, “Waiting’s good.” He swept her feet from his lap and they landed on the carpet. “Stand up."

MY THOUGHTS -

Tempting Meredith is a smokin’ hot love story.  I read Sharing Hailey, book 1 in the Lovers and Friends series, and this is a great addition to this great group of people.  Blaine, Meredith and Charlie are all really perfect for one another.  The chemistry is tense between the three, but I think the Blaine and Charlie coupling is my fave.  The sex scenes in this are wicked hot – Meredith and Charlie, Charlie and Blaine, Blaine and Meredith and then all three of them…and don’t forget he opening threesome in college.  H-O-T!

I enjoyed reading about characters formt he previous books in the series as well – Jake, Nikki and Landon seemed to be doing well.  The storyline is pretty tame – no action, danger or suspense going on here.    I liked this story a lot, but wished there was just a little something more to it…maybe an element of danger or something. Anyways, I liked it.  Great job to the author – keep up the good work!!

review: Working It by Kendall Ryan

Working It by Kendall Ryan

My rating:  4/5
ARC provided by NetGalley for an honest review
Published: 11.11.13
Genre:  New Adult Contemporary Romance, erotic

Summary –

Emmy Clarke is out of her depth in New York City’s fashion world, but when she lands a job as an assistant at a modeling agency it seems like the perfect mix of business and pleasure. Working under the notorious Fiona Stone is a nightmare, but there’s one distinct perk: ogling the ridiculously hot male models who parade through the office—particularly rising star Ben Shaw.

Ben is everything Emmy’s not: exquisitely gorgeous, highly paid, and well-traveled. He’s also got more issues than Vogue. Emmy looks after Ben on photo shoots, but she refuses to become another one of his lusting groupies. Ben finds Emmy’s refreshingly real attitude to be surprisingly attractive.

Against a backdrop of the most fashionable cities in the world, casual flirting turns into an illicit affair, but when Ben’s twisted past is revealed, and the bitter Fiona catches wind of their relationship, their careers and hearts are threatened.

Note: This book is intended for mature audiences. It contains sexual encounters and graphic language, including a m/f/m encounter. (Thanks to GoodReads.com for the summary)

My Thoughts –

Where does the story take place?
NYC
Is the title a good/bad choice for the story?
Good – IT was definitely worked, if you know what I mean…
List the top 4 characters and 1 word to describe them each.
Emmy – fresh, Ben – Whoa, Braydon – great, Fiona - B
Did you cry, laugh, sigh, cringe, fume or feel nothing?
All of those and more!

Holy hell was this book smokin’ hot!!  I read it in one sitting and am sure my cheeks were flushed when I got done with it.  I think Ben and Emmy are a great pair and their chemistry was off the charts.

Emmy is your typical small town girl.  She falls for Ben, and falls for him hard.  She’s kind of oblivious to bigger things going on around her.  Ben is like whoa.  Seriously.  He’s the SHIT at the agency and he knows it.  He’s kind of arrogant but makes up for it during smexy time.  Braydon is a hoot – I can’t wait to read more about him.  Fiona is like the biggest B in the world.

I think Working It is a great story.  Well-written, fast paced and easy to read.  I love the cover, it sure is hot – just like the story.  Great job to the author – I WANT MORE!!
