Follow Friday - (8.2.13) To DNF or finish, that is the question...

This weeks Question:
How do you handle a book you don’t like? Do you DNF or do you power through?
I try and get through it.  It's very rare that I DNF a book.  It took me over a year to finish Queen of the Damned, but I did.  Hated it too.  I think it's more of a curiousity is killing my cat kind of thing.  BUT I always give an honest review.  Like my blog says - I write about how books rock and suck.  Some people may not like my opinion, but it's there none the less.

Q. It's that pesky magic book fairy again! She has another wish: What imaginary book world would you like to make a reality?

OK, so Hogwarts and Harry Potter are the #1 choice, but who wouldn't want to down some butter beer and go to a Quidditch match? I think my second choice would have to be....the Warriors of Poseidon world by Alyssa Day...or the Atlantis series by Gena Showalter. Wouldn't Atlantis be awesome?

Q. Have you ever wanted a villain to win at the end of a story? If so, which one?

Hmmm, I think maybe Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights (I know I used that book for last week's post, honestly I'm not obsessed with the book, but I really can't think of another example at the moment).  That's my only bad guy who I wanted to win. All the bad guys int he books I read now are really, really bad and I usually cheer for the hero/heroine when they defeat the baddie. Now if it were a case of the "other guy" - I'd have to say I really wanted Jacob to win Bella's love in New Moon. Sorry Team Edwarders, that's just how I feel.

Q. If you could change the ending of any book (or series), which book would you choose? Why and to what?

****This is going to be a spoiler fest so try to write the title of the book as a dominant feature - and warn people about spoilers.

Ohhhhhh gosh that's a hard one.  I like all of the books I'm reading now and how they end for the most part.  I think I would change Wuthering Heights to actually have a happy ending.  It's one of the most unsatisfactory book endings ever.

Q. In books like the Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) series the paranormal creature in question "comes out of the closet" and makes itself known to the world. Which mythical creature do you wish would come out of the closet, for real?

Hmmm, I so totally have to go with shapeshifters.  I think the idea of turning into a wolf, large cat or dragon would be wicked awesome:)

Q. If you could write yourself a part in a book, what book would it be and what role would you play in that book?

Ohhh, hard one.  I think I'm going to with Harry Potter and I would totally love to be a teacher at Hogwarts.  I love that world and would love to be a part of it:)

Q. How has your reading habits changed since you were a teen? or If you are still a teen what new genres are you in love with currently?

I would have to say my habits reversed a bit. In middle/high school, I read books like VC Andrews and historical romances. I didn't read teen fiction. I do now and I love it. I read other genres as well, but teen lit has been added to the mix (historical has been tossed out).

Q. Talk about the book that most changed or influenced your life (was it a book that turned you from an average to avid reader, did it help you deal with a particularly difficult situation, does it bring you comfort every time you read it?).

I know it's cliche, but I'm really going to have to say  Harry Potter.  I read like crazy as a kid, but stopped for a while until I was about 20 something.  HP got me back into reading big time and I haven't wavered since.

Q. Let's step away from books for a second and get personal. What T-Shirt slogan best describes you?

My answer would have to be:

Q. Name 3 authors that you would love to sit down and spend an hour or a meal with just talking about either their books or get advice on writing from?

Hmmm, good one.  I think I'm going to go with Megan Hart - because I love her so very unique style of writing, Richelle Mead - because a great author and she's a MI girl too, and Lora Leigh - so I can tell her her stories kick A and to ask her to stop using the word WOMB.

Q. What do I do when I are not reading?

I waste an exuberant amount of time on the computer and the internet.  Sometimes I work.  Sometimes I watch TV.

Q. Let's step away from besties...What is the worst book that you've ever read and actually finished?

I would have to say Queen of the Damned by Anne Rice. It was horrible. Took me over a year to read it. The movie was even worse. Ugh - horrible.

Q. ACK! Your favorite book/movie character (example Hermione Granger played by the Emma chick) just walked into the room! Who is it and what would be your first reaction? You get extra points if you include visual stimulation.

Ohhh, hard one.  I think I'm going to have to go with Kyle Kingsbury/Alex Pettyfer in Beastly.

If not him - then Legolos/Orlando Bloom from Lord of the Rings.

And as to what I'd do if I saw them, I'd probably pee myself from excitement or my heart might stop from pure AWE.  I'm sure there would be drool...

Q. In light of the Summer Solstice. Also known as Midsummer...let's talk about fairies. What is your favorite fairy tale or story that revolves around the fae?

I'd have to say my favorite fairy tale would have to be either Aladdin or Beauty and the Beast.  As for stories that revolve around the fae - I'd have to pick Tithe by Holly Black or The Blue Girl by Charles de Lint.  I also really enjoyed the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning and the Wicked Lovely series by Melissa Marr.

Q. Genre Wars! What's your favorite genre and which book in that genre made it your favorite?

I think my favorite genre has to be menage romance.  The book that had me hooked after I read it would either have to be Be With Me by Maya Banks or Wicked Pleasure by Lora Leigh.

Q. The magic book fairy pops out of your cereal box and says "you and your favorite character (from a book of course) can switch places!" Who are you going to switch with?

My Answer......
I would so totally be Georgina Kincaid!  She's awesome and the paranormal world she lives in rocks.  If I couldn't be her, then I've either have to be Anita Blake (yeah, you know why) or I'd be Hermione Granger (hello, Hogwarts).

Q. What are you doing to prepare for an upcoming zombie apocalypse and/or the return of Mel Gibson to the silver screen? (Both of which could be terrifying.)

I say swords, but my husband and his friends say guns.  Guns, guns and more guns.  My problem with guns is that you can run out of ammo.  Swords are a never-ending source of annihilation.  Zombies stop going after you cut their head off; they can keep going after you shoot them.  "Lasers" would be even better, but only if you didn't have to worry about recharging them.

As for Mel Gibson - the only movies I ever really liked with him in them are Maverick and What Women Want.  I could care less either way really, I never thought he was all that to begin with.

Q. How many books do you read in a week? And in what format do you read them, or listen to them?

My answer: I read around 4-6 books a week, depending on if I'm working or not.  I read print books and books on my nook.  I usually only listen if we're driving to MI and when we do that sometimes i can get 2 done in a day (GA to MI is 15 or more hours).

Q. It's circle time. Time for us to open up and share. Can you tell us FIVE quirky habits or things about you? We all have them...

OK - I'm kind of weird, so don't judge:)

  1. When I use my hands to eat, like french fries or really anything, I have to wash my face afterwards (hands too).  I feel completely greasy and gross if I don't.

  2. I eat wintergreen lifesaver like my life depends on it.  I grind my teeth and get dry mouth really easy and the mints help.

  3. I hate body hair - any kind.  I keep telling my husband that he should go to the girl I go to, but he won't - BYW, she does a mean brazilian.

  4. I hate creases in the spines of books.  It's not as bad if I buy them used and they're already that way, but I threaten with head shaving if the kid creases the spine on any of the new ones.  BTW - she thinks only idiots could crease a trade-sized book, but I've seen it done before.

  5. I love Zumba.  I love dancing and it's more fun than going to a club - plus no hangover in the am.  Unfortunately I've been working a weird schedule this month and haven't been able to go - but here in LaGrange, GA, we have the awesomest Zumba instructor in the world.  I'm hoping to go back in June:)

Question of the week: What is the most emotional scene in a book that you have read lately?

A: I read Angel Thief by Jenny Schwartz last week and the scene where the angel finds out she was too late and the little boy died...tears.
